Batman and Plastic Man find themselves in one of the nine circles of Hell. They fight Geryon and the idea that they are both frauds. They discover a sliver of metal during the battle that they take with them during the fight, causing both to disappear.

Green Arrow and Ragman give in to their anger and fight each other in another level of Hell. Eventually they realize the only to survive is to team up. They wound Phlegias and locate a metallic fragment that causes them to disappear.

In another level of Hell, Donna Troy and Bulleteer are accused of heresy by the demon Lilith. Donna is accused because of her faith in Greek Gods and Bulleteer because of her atheism. They find a large chunk of metal that causes them to disappear after defeating Lilith.

Superman and Red Tornado both confront the idea they are parts of many worlds, but do not really belong to either one. Superman discovers a jewel that causes the two heroes to vanish after they defeat Minos.

Char'rah provides an illusion to both Hawkman and the Demon causing them to think they have become their worst enemies. The two heroes fight and Char'rah feeds on their violent natures until the Demon changes to Jason Blood, breaking the spell. Jason then reflects Char'rah's magic on Char'rah, defeating the Hell-circle guardian. The two then locate another piece of Dante's mask before disappearing.

Both Lobo and Fire are accused of being greedy and both suffer for those sins. Lobo finds a sliver of gold that Plutus won't part with and decides to take it, causing the two heroes to vanish.

Booster and Oracle are accused of gluttony: Oracle for her need for more information, Booster for his need to be needed. They both fight Cerberus who has a piece of Dante's mask wedged between his teeth.

Both Zatanna and Green Lantern face past betrayals: Zatanna's betrayal of Batman and John's destruction of a planet. The demon that taunts them has a false tooth that is yet another piece Dante's mask.

Wonder Woman and Supergirl find themselves fighting demons until an image of Batman appears. Both heroines believe it is that Batman they are attracted to and long to spend eternity with. But a smile gives the demon away. Supergirl finds a sliver of metal encased in glass that causes the two women to disappear.

In Purgatory, Lord Satanus reveals himself to the 18 heroes and of his plan: to have them gather the pieces of the Hell Mask, who's parts were scattered in the 9 Circles of Hell. The artifact can control anyone and anything, including God. But Plastic Man steals the restored mask from Satanus and gains control of it. He then has the heroes turn their powers on him in order to destroy the mask. Zauriel saves his life at the last second. Then Blaze and Zauriel return the heroes home.
