Trapped in the Dark Multiverse, Batman finds that his reality keeps changing, as he keeps shifting from one time period to another. He tries to solve the mysteries that he faces in each time period so that he can escape the Dark Multiverse and return home, but he discovers these events are being manipulated by Barbatos.

Dark Nights: Metal tie-in

Batman Lost - Batman was lost in the Dark Multiverse in Dark Nights: Metal #2. Story continues in Dark Nights: Metal (DC, 2017 series) #4. Batman is shown in time periods that he previously visited in Batman: The Return of Bruce Wayne (DC, 2010 series), in which he was cast from one time period to another. It was his trip to the age of Neanderthals where he first caught the attention of Barbatos. Bruce at age 78 is shown recounting for his granddaughter the story of his first case "The Case of the Chemical Syndicate" from Detective Comics (DC, 1937 series) #27, although the details are different here, as manipulated by Barbatos.
