Mordru, as an agent of Chaos, begins to attack magic-based heroes tied into Fate's legacy, so as to learn the whereabouts of the new Fate about to appear, so he can absorb his magicks for himself and make himself more powerful than ever. He attempts to get the information from Sandman, but fails when Sandman commits suicide by falling off a cliff to his death. The information, however, is forwarded to his former ward, Sandy Hawkins, in a dream as he sees his mentor dying. He then takes up his mentor's role as Sand, and begins to gather a new JSA together from that information.

• Gathering Storms - First appearance of the new Hawkgirl. Nuklon adopts the Atom Smasher name and costume first seen in Kingdom Come. Story continues in JSA (DC, 1999 series) #1.
• The Dark Lord - Mordru now considered as having lived a long life, with his youth spent in the 20th century honing his powers before he became the evil sorcerer of the Legion's 30th century.
